Don't Let Your Art Grow Up To Be Cowboys

Are you a visual artist? A musician? Do you create anything that could/would/should involve copyrighting? You should know about a bill that has been introduced earlier this year that may affect your livelihood. It's called the Orphan Works Act of 2008, Bill #H.R. 5889. It's a bill that would change the law to shift the burden of diligence from infringers to the rights holders. That's you. Pee-yew. If Frank we're alive today...

If you want to read a pro bill opinion, click here for the view of Marybeth Peters, our Register of Copyrights. She thinks it's hunky-dory.

For the views of Arts Organizations such as the Illustrators Partnerships of America, American Society of Illustrators Partnership (hmm, didn't I just say that?), Advertising Photographers of America, Society of Photographers and Artists Representatives (SPAR), Stock Artists Alliance, and many others, click here. On this site you can easily choose an area where you can make your opinion known to your representatives, no matter what state you live in. The lame duck session that started yesterday just recessed. In the meantime, speak up, folks. That's why we elect the suits that create bills and make laws. For us. And so we don't have to wear those itchy things.

Oh, and to know you're in good company, here's a list of organizations that oppose this bill.

I was in the thick of Tucson's Democratic gathering at the Marriott that night and when California started blinking and the electoral votes hit 333...the roar was DEAFENING! I was playing drums with the Wayback Machine and in the final verse of 'Wild Nights', the roof was raised. I snapped the shot below right after we ended the song.

Beholden to Ageism?

Over the years I've thought about and discussed with others the subject of creativity and age. Some of my favorite musicians wrote and performed their best work before the age of 30, even starting in their teens. Some have kept an even keel and have delivered quality, vital work over a lifetime. Still others didn't gel until they were over 50.

So, I was delighted to read an article in the Oct 20th issue of the New Yorker about this very subject. The article is by Malcolm Gladwell and is titled 'Late Bloomers (Why do we equate genius with precocity?)'.

This article is reinforcement for those in the autumn of their lives who have a burning desire or passion that they can't help but to pursue, to just do it. A few examples from the article: ...there was Alfred Hitchcock, who made “Dial M for Murder,” “Rear Window,” “To Catch a Thief,” “The Trouble with Harry,” “Vertigo,” “North by Northwest,” and “Psycho”—one of the greatest runs by a director in history—between his fifty-fourth and sixty-first birthdays. Mark Twain published “Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” at forty-nine. Daniel Defoe wrote “Robinson Crusoe” at fifty-eight.

Yes, these are extraordinary people but as Simone de Beauvoir wrote, "One is not born a genius, one becomes a genius". Who knows what we are capable of until we shed a few layers, take off the school kid skin, get over ourselves, and get to work? Good night and good luck...and vote!

Palin Bashing is fun!

Some of my first cousins have stumble upon my little blog. Cousin Shawn emailed me asking if I'm taking a break from Palin bashing. In my mind...NOOOO. But, the last couple of weeks have seen me totally immersed in wrapping up the basic tracks for my new CD, packing up my office to move into another part of the building while still creating and producing content for various departments on campus AND training a new student employee AND performing the tasks for the two teams I'm on, being out sick a few days and playing several gigs this month.

In terms of the political commentary...I can keep on whining about the Republikan cartoon characters running for president and other nutbags forever, blah, blah, blah. But if you haven't checked out Rachel Maddow on MSNBC of all places, do so. She is a very bright and witty host who doesn't flinch when taking on the old right such as Pat Buchanan. Y'know, all my favorite Republikan bashers are bright and witty...Bill Maher, Jon Stewart, Keith Olbermann. Why is it the windbags on the right seem not to possess an ounce of wit?

This post comes to you from a $50 motel room on I-15 in Beaver, Utah.

Bev Seckinger. I sometimes think I juggle a lot of balls at the same time. Then there's Bev. She is interim Director of Media Arts at the University of Arizona, teaches a class, plays music several nights a week, is the director of Lesbian Looks Film & Video Series, has a new film in the can, and has recently been following her earlier documentary film around the country that's being screened at various festivals this year.

The film is "Laramie Inside Out" and I was fortunate to be asked by her when the film was in production to help with the music. We basically sat down for a few days, looked and listened, and discussed what music, mostly from Tucson musicians, would make a good fit. I was honored to help and to have one of my songs included, "Hang 'em High Tango". I was also honored to get credit as Musical Consultant.

Her film is being screened at the 2008 Western History Association Documentary Film Festival in Salt Lake City. Actually, it was screened last night. She was also asked to put together a band for the festival party Friday night and this is where I come in. I'm on my way to SLC with a PA system, bass and guitar rig and drums to play a one night stand there. She also flew in our good buddy Mitzi Cowell who is now attending school at the University of Toronto. So it will be the three of us making music together as we have for many years and give me a chance to catch up with Mitzi since I saw her off from Tucson in August.
